The Snake Alley Criterium is held on a fifteen block course, with
differences in elevation from 555 feet to 678 feet. The course is entirely
on city streets, mostly in a downtown commercial area. A one block long climb
is on the historic brick street named Snake Alley, dubbed "the crookedest
street in the world." The 276 foot long Snake Alley has 5 switchbacks in
a sixty foot climb. The average grade is 12.5 percent in that one block. Bring
a suitable gear cluster for that kind of climbing. This is one of the most
physically challenging races in the Midwest.
Race Rules
Registration is from 7:30 am on Jefferson Street. You must pick up
your numbers before the close of registration for your event. Registration
closes 1 hour before the scheduled start time for each event. If you fail
to pick up your number on time, you may forfeit your entry fee and your number
will be offered to riders on any waiting lists. You will not be allowed to
race if you do not have your racing license. You are required to show your
license to registration officials before you are given your number.
Riders will be staged in order of registration.
NO FREE LAP at the Snake Alley Criterium
You must wear an approved helmet and have it properly fastened at all times
you are on a bicycle at a race. This includes while warming up, on or off
the course.
Photo finish at all criteriums and road races for the weekend.
Your racing license must be presented to collect any prizes. Prizes may
be paid by check, you maybe required to sign a receipt. Prizes over $600
are reported to the Internal Revenue Service for which Social Security Numbers
will be requested.
NO REFUNDS, in accordance with USCF rules. All USCF rules to apply.
Course is located at Jefferson and Fifth Streets in Burlington, Iowa. Take
US Highway 34 downtown. From the west, take the "last Iowa exit". From the
east take the first Iowa exit. Take Main Street south to Washington Street,
then turn east and park on the riverfront. Absolutely no warming up on the
course before 8:45 am or during the noon break.
The Cobble Climb is a 2 block long time trial straight up an incredibly
steep & lumpy alley. The first block is an easy brick surface,
while the second block is paved with ancient & huge cobble stones.
A mountain bike with big tires and suspension is highly recommended.
Experience hundreds of screaming fans right at your elbows while you try to
stay upright. GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO!
